What we do...
Contact

A member of Witness Service will meet you at the court entrance. If you would prefer, they can meet you at a side or back entrance [if possible].
We will then inform the co-ordinator, the usher, and the CPS, that you have arrived.
You will then be offered a chance to have a look around the court [if available].
Then we will lead you to the witness suit, a room provided by the court for witnesses.
Witness Service will answer any questions or queries.
Then we will explain some of the court jargon.
Witness Service will get your witness statement for you to read over. If you aren’t able to do this a member of Witness Service with your permission will read it with you. Please remember we understand that people have different learning difficulties, for different reasons.
We ask that you don’t discuss your statement with other witnesses, or Witness Service members.

If you feel that something is not right with your statement we will tell the appropriate persons, who will discuss this with you.
We will sit with you and talk to you while you wait to go into court. You should be prepared that this can sometimes take up to several hours.
If you would like, we will then go into the court with you and sit at the side in the court. We won’t be able to talk or make contact with you while you do this.
Although this is probably the scariest part, we and all the other court officials understand that you may be nervous about giving evidence. We will all do our best to make you as comfy as possible.
We will then leave the room together. You won’t be able to go back into the witness room if there are other witnesses there.
We will then discuss any problems or issues you have.
Then we will walk with you to the court exit.
If you have requested any after support (although Witness Service doesn’t offer this), we will with your permissions be happy to pass on your details to the appropriate agency.
