What the words mean.
CPS- Crown Prosecution Service.
Crown Court- A court of law where criminal cases of a more serious offence are heard.
Defence team- The defence team is made up of solicitors and barristers. Their job is to get the defendant off the charge.
Defendant/s -The person or persons who are accused of the alleged crime.
Evidence- This can come in many forms such as an object which was used in a crime.
Judge- A person who sits in on a Crown Court case, to ensure a fair trail is given.
Jury- A randomly selected group of men and women who will listen to the facts in a court case and will consider if the defendant is guilty or not.
Magistrates- Three men or women who sit in on a Magistrates court case to oversee that a fair trail is given.
Magistrates Court- A court of law where lesser charges are heard.
Prosecution team- The prosecution team shows the court how the defendant could have committed the crime.
Statement- A persons account of what happened when the alleged crime took place. This could be written down or in video form.
Victim-A person who is a victim of a crime in any way is referred to as a victim.
Witness- A person who has witnessed a criminal offence, is referred to as a witness.
Witness Service- A charity that works in criminal courts by helping and preparing victims and witnesses of crime who are about to give evidence in a court of law.
