Q: Do I have to give evidence?
A: Yes, not only is it the moral [right] thing to do, but if you have been summoned to give evidence and you don’t turn up an arrest warrant may be issued. If you can’t turn up on the day please let the court know a soon as possible.
Q: How long will I be in court for?
A: Please allow a full day. For all Crown cases these may last longer check with your solicitor who will advise.
Q: Will I get my expenses paid back?
A: Yes, you will need an expense form, if you haven't already got one please ask a member of Witness Service who will advise you.
Q: Will I see the defendant?
Q: I have a disability will this affect how I give my evidence?
A; The court offers a variety of options for people with all types of disabilities, and will always try to accommodate these, e.g., interpreters, wheelchair access. If you are insure that the court can provide you with the necessary things please contact the court, who will be happy to advise you.
Q: Are my details kept private
A: All records kept by witness service are protected by the data protection act.
Q: How do I get to court?
A: Transport will be arranged if you aren’t able to get to the court. Please phone before case date to arrange this.
Q: What do I do when I get to the court?
A: Tell the court security guard or usher at the court entrance your name and that you are here as a witness.
Q: Who will look after my children?
A: Unless a young witness is accompanied by an adult, Witness Service members are unable to look after children. You may bring a friend or family member to do this, but please remember it may be a long day for them. Your expenses may also cover child care, please check with CPS.
Q: How will I find the outcome of the trial?
A: If you ring your local Witness Service they will try and help you.
